The built-up area has very ancient origins, proved by several
archaelogical finds. During the Roman period it was probably the seat of
a military camp, which had to control the crossroad of some important
ways.
CITRON VILLA (Villa dei cedri)
It is at the beginning of the built-up area. The
permanent exposition of Veneto’s spumante wines is inside the villa.
MARCONI’S SQUARE
It represents the historical and commercial heart
of the built-up area. The scenary is composed of houses and villas
rooting in the slope lying behind and of the encircling mountains.
PROVOSTSHIP CHURCH
Period:
Dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption,
rebuilt in the place of the original 1200’s church, it was consacrated
in 1816. The original project is by B. Salomoni, but was later modified
by Segusini and at last by Vicentini.
Works:
In the Ionic-style pronaos, there is a
beautiful portal with a bas-relief and several statues. Inside there is
only one nave, with tapered corners and a vaulted ceiling. The
presbytery is made higher thanks to an apsidal dome. There are several
frescoes and paintings. Among them, the altar piece, dedicated to Our
Lady of Assumption, is worth admiring. The baroque altar is overlooked
by a big tabernacle and the statues of two angels. In the corner niche,
there is the old baptistry with a big font with Gothic inscription and
octagonal spire.
TOWN HALL PALACE
It was built to the south of the provostship
church and is characterized by a long porch. Along the flight of steps
you can read a war memorial plaque, work of S. Rossetto.
SAN FLORIANO’S CHURCH
The simple façade is overlooked by a dome over
the transept and by the high bell tower. It is destination of
pilgrimages. After a short, steep slope, you can arrive there and admire
the panorama.
SAN GREGORIO’S THE GREAT ORATORY
It was built in 1482, but it now has an
eighteenth-century structure. The façade, with a rose-window, is
preceded by a flight of steps which leads to the churchyard surrounded
by cypresses. Inside, there is a canvas by Brusasorci representing
Our Lady of the Rosary. |
