Art and history of Sarmede
WAR MEMORIAL MONUMENTThe work, by Giovanni Possamai, is in the main square. SARMEDE’S PARISH CHURCH It is dedicated to Saint Antony from Padova. Works: On the ceiling there is a fresco by N. Bordignon (1901) portraying “Saint Anthony’s Glory”. The altar piece and the two statues on the main altar are from the 18th century. Furthermore, you can admire a woden altar and an altar piece, a big 1659’s crucifix by G.B. Prandini, a banner by G. C. Bevilacqua portraying the Virgin Mary and Saint Anthony. OSIGO’S PARSH CHURCH It is dedicated to Saint George amd was built in a place standing above Osigo’s hamlet. Works: A remarkable 1529’s altar piece representing Saint George killing the Dragon, fra’ Saint Daniel and the Dragon is attributed to Francesco Da Milano. Furthermore, you can notice: the base of the Easter Candle by Nadal da Piai (1696), frescoes on the dome and on the pendentives standing below, other valuable paintings and the ceramics representing the Way of the Cross. MONTANER’S PARISH CHURCHIt is dedicated to Saint Pancras. Works: N. Bordignon frescoed The Glory of Saint Pancras, on the ceiling (1888). The altar piece is by A. Dal Favero and the two big paintings beside the choir by V. Casagrande. SAINT CECILY’S CHURCHIt was built in the hamlet Val Montaner. Works: The altar piece, by Pomponio Amalteo, portrays Saint Cecily ant the Saints Urban, George, Florian and Titian (1586). There are other two paintigs on the wooden side-altars. One of them dates back to 1700. SAINT GEORGE’S CHURCH It is in Rugolo and has very ancient origins. Up to the last century, the church was under the authority of Aquileia’s Patriarchate. It is encircled by the churchyard. On the outer wall you can see the remains of a fresco. A memorial tablet on the bell tower reminds of the long fight of Rugolo against the neighbouring Sarmede. Works: The altar piece, by E. Dall’Oglio, representing Saint George killing the Dragon (1756) was removed and replaced with a fresco by an unknown author. There are other valuable frescoes on the side-altars and beside the main door. |
