Art and history to Conegliano

 

SAN ROCCO’S CHURCH

 

Period: it was rebuilt in 1900.

 

Works: Inside you can admire Francesco Beccaruzzi’s altar piece. There is also a fresco by Giovanni De Min (1827).

 

CONEGLIANO’S CASTLE

Period: The esplanade facing the castle was settled at the beginning of 1900 by rebuilding the embattled wall which encircles the Italian-style garden.

Bell tower: It is the seat of the Town Museum since 1952. It contains collections of memorial stones and inscriptions, Francesco da Milano’s paintings, a wooden sculpture by Giambologna, two bronze sculptures by Arturo Martini and other works by Ludovico Pozzoserrato and Palma il Giovane.

 

VIA XX SETTEMBRE

It is the former Cal Grande, lined by a series of noble finely-decorated palaces dating back to the 15th and 16th century.

Montalban Nuovo Palace

It is an interesting example of neo-classical architecture and one of the most beautiful palaces of the town. It is characterised by two façades.

 

Sarcinelli Palace

It was built after 1550 following Venetian models. It now contains the town library and the modern art gallery. The main room is decorated by some remarkable stuccoworks.

 

VIA CIMA

Among artistic buildings we have to mention:

Sbarra House

It is at the corner of via Cima and is embellished by frescoes on the façade. It represents one of the most important examples of the late 15th century’s architecture in Conegliano.

 

Cima’s House

It is on the left of Piazza Accademia, in the street going up to the Castle. It was an ancient artisans’ residence, now seat of a foundation dedicated to Conegliano’s painter Gian Battista Cima.

 

CATHEDRAL

Period: The bell tower was built in 1497 and later raised. The façade is a long 9-arcade’s porch, seat of the Scuola dei Battuti from the 14th to the 15th century. The arcades have 3 Romanesque three-mullioned windows over them and are decorated by frescoes.

Structure: There are 3 naves inside. It was restored in 1956-62.

Works: The altar piece is a “Madonna on the throne with the Saints” by G.B. Cima (1493). In the chapel on the left there is a painting by Francesco Frigimelica. You can see other interesting 15th century’s frescoes.

 

SALA DEI BATTUTI

Period: It was built at the end of the 14th century for the reunion of the Battuti’s brotherhood.

Works: There is a very beautiful wooden lacunar fresco made by several artists such as Fracesco Da Milano, Andrea Previtali, Ludovico Pozzoserrato.

 

PIAZZA CIMA

Period: It was rebuild in 1800. The neighbouring town hall was erected in the 18th century by the architect Scotti. On the western side there is Da Collo’s Palace (1500). The Teatro Accademia is in neo-classic Greek style. It was planned by Andrea Scala in 1846-47.
